How do I pay tolls on The Toll Roads?

When you drive The Toll Roads, you can pay the toll two ways - with cash or with FasTrak.

FasTrak is an electronic toll-collection system used on tollways in California that allows drivers to drive through designated "FasTrak Only" lanes without stopping. The toll is automatically deducted from a prepaid account.

You can also pay tolls with cash on the 73, 241, 133 and 261 Toll Roads. Not all toll booths are staffed so be prepared to pay with exact change at automatic coin machines. (Note: Cash is not accepted on the 91 Express Lanes, which is run by a separate entity from The Toll Roads.)

On The Toll Roads, there are two types of locations to pay the toll - at ramps (as you enter or exit the road) and at mainline toll plazas.

Paying tolls at ramps. As you enter a ramp toll plaza, the road separates into FasTrak lanes on the left and cash lanes on the right. FasTrak patrons can pass through the designated FasTrak lanes without stopping and the toll will automatically be deducted. Cash patrons should have exact change, as most ramps are equipped with automatic coin machines. Ramp toll rates vary from $0.50 to $2.00. At a coin machine, simply place the toll in the collection basket. Once the toll is paid, you will see a green light that signals you to drive through.

Paying tolls at mainline toll plazas. As you enter a mainline plaza, the road separates into FasTrak lanes on the left and cash lanes on the right. FasTrak patrons can pass through the designated FasTrak lanes without stopping and the toll will automatically be deducted. Mainline plaza toll rates on the 73 Toll Road vary from $3.25 to $5.00, depending on the method of payment (cash or FasTrak) or the time of day. On the 241, 261 and 133 Toll Roads, toll rates vary from $1.00 to $2.75, depending on the method of payment (cash or FasTrak) and the time of day. If you are paying cash, you will either pay a toll collector or an automatic coin machine.

Toll collectors can accept bills up to $20. At a coin machine, simply place the toll in the collection basket. Once the toll is paid, you will see a green light that signals you to drive through.

Can I pay my tolls with cash?

Yes. You can pay your toll with cash on the 73, 241, 133 and 261 Toll Roads. Not all toll booths are staffed so be prepared to pay with exact change at automatic coin machines. Automatic coin machines accept $1.00 coins, 50 cents coins, quarters, dimes and nickels. No pennies or bills please. Most machines require you to get coin change first, then place the coins into the basket to pay the toll. Some machines accept $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills and will deduct the toll automatically.

Do I need exact change on The Toll Roads?

At mainline toll plazas that are staffed by a toll attendant, you can pay the toll with coins or bills up to $20. You will need exact change at most ramp plazas. Ramp tolls vary from $0.50 to $2.00.

Some ramps are equipped with bill-changer machines where you can get coin change for $1 and $5 bills. If you exchange your bills for coins, you will need to put the exact amount of change in the toll collection basket. A few machines will accept change for paper bills and then automatically deduct the toll in one step.

Once the toll is paid, you will see a green light that signals you to drive through.

What if I do not have exact change and drive through?

You will receive a Notice of Toll Evasion (also called a toll violation) in the mail within two weeks. Improper payment of each toll incurs a $47.50 processing fee, plus the toll amount. You can contest the violation by filling out the dispute section on the back of the notice, or calling Violations Department at 949-727-4800.

If you do not have previous violations, the violation notice will include an offer to open a FasTrak account. FasTrak is a convenient way to pay your tolls electronically. When opening a FasTrak account, you establish a prepaid account from which tolls can be deducted. We will apply $15 of the violation processing fee to your prepaid balance if you chose to open an account. If you prefer not to open an account, you can simply mail in the $47.50 processing fee and the toll amount upon receipt of the violation notice.

Can I tow a boat or trailer on The Toll Roads?

A boat or trailer can be towed on The Toll Roads. Please note, if you plan to use FasTrak, be sure to record the license plate of your boat or trailer on your account. You can add a license plate to your account online. California State Highway laws also apply on The Toll Roads, therefore any vehicle pulling a boat or trailer must follow the same rules and regulations as you do on the regular highways. Boats and trailers cannot be towed on the 91 Express Lanes, the 10-mile tollway in the median of the 91 Freeway, which is run by a separate entity.

I drive a motorcycle; do I have to pay a toll? And can I use FasTrak?

Motorcycles pay the same toll as a two-axle vehicle when using The Toll Roads. Motorcyclists can use FasTrak to pay. Be sure to keep the transponder in a secure location, such as on the vehicle or in a pocket or bag.
